'Ayurveda' the science of life, has gained immense popularity in the Western world not just because it's Indian but it speaks of eternal truth. The truth about life and its existence. About how the health could be maintained by following some simple, yet, effective regimens.
When I say regimens, it begins with waking up in the Brahmamuhurta, the period that promotes brahmajnaana. The period when the energy and logical thinking are at the highest levels. This is followed by some other simple techniques like Gandusha (gargles of kashaya=decoction) which highlights the importance of oral hygiene in addition to keeping the paranasal sinuses (cavities in the bones surrounding the nasal cavity) patent and healthy. Doing good to others, doing charity, speaking truth, being humble are among others labeled as SADVRITTHA.Thus it makes way for positive energy, which is known to promote health. It's well known how the mental stress, anxiety, hatred, violence and untrustworthiness cause immense pressure on the body cells causing them to behave crazily leading to diseases. This is where Ayurveda, the science whose principles remain unchanged to this day, comes into play. This science, in its scriptures, mentions causes for each disease holistically and has solutions for the same. The seers believed that there isn't a material in this world which cannot be used as a medicine. Thus emerged the science of healing. Herbs, creepers, vegetable oils and few animal products are judiciously used in this system apart from the metals and minerals that later came into use. When these conservative approaches in the form of oral medicines and applicables fail to crack the nut, it advocates the detoxification techniques by Panchakarma. Well, Pancha means 5, the Vamana, Virechana, Nasya, Basti (Enemas) and Rakthamokshana. Apart from these, are the scores of other techniques that not only associate with the above, but also promote their own properties in bringing about well-being. Because, that is the definition of health "Balanced DOSHAS (humors-Vaata, Pitta & Kapha), good Agni (digestive fire) Balanced dhatus ( the 7 tissue elements- The Rasa- The plasma, The Rakta- blood, Maamsa- the muscle, flesh, Medas- the adipose tissue, or fat, Asthi- the bony skeletal framework, Majjaa- the marrow inside the bones, and Shukra i.e the reproductive cells in the form of gametes; The good bowel habits (Passing stools with ease) and a happy and content aatma- the soul, indriya- the senses, and Manas- the mind. This definition is complete and is accepted by the W.H.O as the ideal and most appropriate definition of health. Look at the way how Ayurveda emphasizes even the social health.
In this modern world where there's stress and irregularities in food habits, sleep and sexual behavior, where there's so much of social injustice, where there's hatred and lack of loyalty, lust and greed one can imagine the amount of toxins that can lodge in our system. Well, only Ayurveda has the answer.
